It’s challenging and an adjustment period for those having emotional connections to their careers. Retirement used to be something everyone looked forward but we live like we are forced into it. There are people afraid of changes, but the fear most of us have always greater than reality. This fear of change range from mild to strong demands from reshaping of identity to reshape of relationships and reshape of lifestyle to reshape the expectations. The questions most people think about before retirement “How much money they need?”, “How they adjust with the new phase?” and “Are they have enough funds”, most of the time people forget considering the demand for psychological adjustments. Doubts begin to creep in and fear overwhelms the confidence, but it’s important to keep this in mind that we no longer have work pressure and dealing with the stressful job. Sometimes that fear points us to strengthen our plans in financial ways, and other times, it’s all about emotional comfort. Both are equally important and equally worth listening to, but money isn’t the only reason to be afraid of retirement, we have a much bigger challenge of change in the routine. In my word I define retirement as more settling stage, when we give more time ourselves, time relax and enjoy every moment. It’s not always about diligent saving, right retirement planning is the primary step is to do before heading to retirement. The real problem behind our fear is not money, it’s about lack of purpose, like:
- Self-Employment or Part-Time Work – For Mental and Physical Health
- Delaying Retirement – Off to cognitive decline

- Volunteer work – Low blood pressure
- Social circle – Healthy psychological well-being
- Family Activities – Help with emotional challenges
While there’s no key secret to preparing for every high and low during retirement, but proper planning will provide us with multiple scenarios over an extended period before deciding. Retirement planning always gives us two different pictures of our plan and, on evaluation, we always come up with a solution to cover the “gap” required by the desired lifestyle. It’s a big step to plan accordingly, but the biggest concern is to follow the entire plan. Throughout the entire career, we were asking for extra time but when we have it we don’t value it. It never makes sense to live in the past or want to be 40 again, retiring means long life, new opportunities, excitement, challenge, and self-discovery. As part of my motivation, I had desired living expenses, but it was not planned on how to start this new life. Like any other good retiree, I scheduled it from the morning walk to my making breakfast for my family and then helped family members in need. Working in retirement is a useful way to stay healthy, well-being and life satisfaction.
Do the things you were not able to while working
We passed that phase when we find ourselves self buried in work with no hope of getting back on top. Even if we try to struggle with this, our liabilities, responsibilities push us back to the bottom. Having free- time, sound like we are talking about our dream, it was a non-existing word in our dictionary of life. Instead of celebrating retirement, we still live under the stress of getting retired. It scares most of us of loneliness and has a fear of being neglected, it’s a bit scarier than the thought. More than half of our life is driven by the daily schedule, books to school, college to degrees and then deadlines to meetings. Most people react dramatically to it and try to cut themselves from the family or from their social circle. If you are not accustomed to enjoying and making a new schedule of activities, you might end up feeling guilty about not doing anything productive. From childhood I heard people saying “Retirement Is A Slow Phase “but I think life is running on its own speed, it’s us who stopped by mid of somewhere. Retired life can be the change for good, the chance to build new memories, experience new start by setting new goals to achieve. Retirement is more than a reward after years of paying the dues or bills. Protect yourself from guilty by building a shield made up of new dreams.
Our retirement planning needs to be more focused on the particular passion that we missed earlier. Perhaps it would join any club, any new sports, music class or to become a photographer or an artist or it would be multiple things to do at the same time. Revaluation is not to doubt yourself, but of course, there is no harm to consider all possible angles that can be future obstacles. Redefine your passion is the same as having control over your freedom after all the effort has to be made by you only. The journey to retirement was full of stresses and strains, ups and downs, the string of problems, etc. Nothing in life ever comes easily, not to face this anymore in this new beginning of life needs homework to prepare yourself for dissonance.
